Susan’s designer and style accomplishments stem from a successful career as an international supermodel. Susan has rocked the catwalk for Valentino, Versace, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Azzedine Alaia, Calvin Klein, Armani, Donna Karan, Herve Leger, Stephen Sprouse, Bill Blass, Michael Kors and others… Holmes McKagan scored campaigns for Adrienne Vittadini, Dolce & Gabbana, YSL, Fendi, Guess, Escada, Louis Vuitton, Karl Lagerfeld, Rochas, Diesel jeans, Claude Montana… as well as Gottex Swimwear, Victoria’s Secret, and billboards, ads and commercials for Peugot, Triumph lingerie, H&M.
As a senior in high school, surrounded by the La Jolla surf scene, Holmes McKagan made dresses, tunics and swimwear just for fun. Her hobby was temporarily sidelined when her modeling career beckoned. Holmes McKagan would arrive to her confirmed high end fashion shoots, around the globe, where some of the world’s most respected editors, designers and stylists, would comment on how fantastic she looked upon her arrival-some stated, that she in fact, “made their job that much easier and inspiring, as she already looked dressed the part for the editorial spread in the magazine.” On occasion, certain designers would snap a picture of her arrival “look” and then incorporate certain vintage finds and ideas of hers, into their ongoing collection!
Holmes Mckagan has also graced the covers of U.S. and/or international editions of VOGUE, W, Glamour, marie-claire, Visionaire, Hampton’s magazine, OK!, The Hollywood Reporter Playboy. She has appeared in beauty ads for Rene Guinot and Revlon for VOGUE. Susan was a celebrity guest Judge and guest Creative Director and designer, alongside famed colleague Tyra Banks on “America’s Next Top Model.”
She was a star on E! Entertainment’s series “Married to Rock” which airs in 59 countries worldwide to E!’s audience of 97 million viewers, as well as a regular guest host commentator, on their fashion and celebrity countdown shows. Susan’s styling and own personal designs have been featured in VOGUE, WWD, ELLE, Lucky, Life & Style, Star, Us Weekly, Maxim and on the covers of Sports Illustrated, Apparel News and People magazine.
Presented to her by supermodel Niki Taylor, Susan won the honorary “Swimwear Designer of the Year Award” at the 15th Annual Michael Awards in NYC. Previous winners in various categories include Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, John Varvatos and Calvin Klein. Susan feels so blessed to have worked with the world’s most eminant editors, designers and stylists (Grace Coddington – Creative Director and Anna Wintour’s right hand woman at VOGUE, Paul Cavaco – Allure and Harper’s Bazaaar, and Elizabeth Saltzman of Vanity Fair and VOGUE, and Joe McKenna of Azzedine Alaia and Bruce Webber fame).
She has had the good fortune of accomplishing amazing photographs with some of the world’s greatest fashion photographers: including Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Matthew Rolston and Ellen Von Unwerth to name a few.
By the mid 1990’s Holmes McKagan was one of the 25 highest paid fashion models. According to an interview by famed Elsa Klensch on CNN, Susan earned the title “the Body” from her modeling success, particularly in lingerie and swimwear. Susan starred (as the bride) alongside fellow models Tyra Banks, Helena Christensen, Kate Moss in the British film “Inferno!”
She has appeared on Mtv, TV Land, CW, CNN, The Travel Channel, vh1, CNBC, FBN, Bloomberg Network and has a regular series show on E! Entertainment , and also acts as a semi regular host/Fashion & Styling Expert on FOX News when her schedule permits. Holmes McKagan was honored by the Mayor, in 2005 with a “Key to both Toledo and Detroit”- for her recognition from her hometowns, for her international/businesswoman endeavours.
After spending more than ten years living abroad in fashion capitols Paris, Milan and New York – Susan now lives part time in Los Angeles/Seattle. She enjoys dedicating her time with her family (two daughters), reminded Susan of her original idea of getting back to her roots back to fashion and design. Her focus is on creating looks that “exude charm with rock n’ roll inspiration.”
She credits her husband of thirteen years, rock star Duff McKagan, founding member and bassist of 100 million albums sold worldwide Guns N’ Roses, and Grammy Award winning band Velvet Revolver, as an integral part of her inspiration and designs. One of the highlights she enjoys, in having a fun and successful business, in which she gets to contribute back over 10% after net proceeds- to wonderful charities, such as “Project Angel Food”, “Surfrider Foundation” and The Red Cross for natural disaster victims. All of Susan’s designs are made in America-no slave labor.
